Work in Process, a Toile TSW Liberty with a Twist

My latest project is a bit more time consuming, but I have been chugging along with it and enjoying the process. The Sewing Workshop's Liberty Shirt requires precise sewing. Plus, I added pattern matching across the front. It's an extra touch I've added on most of the tops I've made over the past couple of years. The difficulty depends on the fabric but is not hard on a stable cotton like this one.

This toile is a fun one that I discovered at a Material Girls session recently. We meet at Ann Silva's Bernina, which also sells a pretty good assortment of quilting cottons, of which this is one. It's an Alexander Henry fabric named "Midnight Pastoral", and that's where the twist comes in. It's a fairly classic toile, until you get up close...

Can you see it yet?

Because I love Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, it's a wonderful choice.

I made this pretty much as before, including a self drafted collar vs. the curved bias one that the pattern has. It's almost done. I just need to make buttonholes and sew on some buttons, but I have to decide what buttons and switch machines first.

I love this. Keep the buttons simple with this print and you can wear it with so many things.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was considering the same red ones I used for the Route 66 version, but that's probably too over the top. On the other hand, I recently picked up some ivory buttons that could work and are much more subtle.

Love the print, Nancy, and your use of it. Fabrics That Go, a store here in Tucson carries lots of Day of the Dead prints, including this one. I have a shirtdress and just finished a Negroni shirt for DH using the fabric.

Good to know Theresa. We visited Tucson last winter and had a wonderful time. We will definitely be back again!

Excellent pattern matching - your sewing skills are incredible! And that print is very clever - not what you expect from a distance ... J

She a beaut, Nancy! I see it with the cream buttons, too.

Some little skull buttons in the same ivory as your shirt would be just perfect, I think.
I love the shirt and the way you have made it. Exquisite with the added ghoulish twist. Perfect for Halloween and the season beyond.
I'd love to see a picture of your collar. I'm awaiting my pattern and like your collar so much better than the original.
Thanks
Barbara

I noticed the pattern matching the first thing and it is IMPECCABLE. Then I noticed the whimsical Halloween print. LOVE IT.

Hi Nancy, I just found your blog and am so impressed this jacket is beautiful. I live in New Mexico too - up in Santa Fe. I would love to know more about the "Material Girls". I am becoming an avid sewer after not sewing much since my youth. Thanks for your blog!

Hi Diane, I have been away from the site for a few days and I didn't realize your comments could not be seen. I hope you don't mind that I posted all 3 of them!

Anyhow, about Material Girls. It's an offshoot, or "Neighborhood Group", of the Albuquerque chapter of the American Sewing Guild. The chapter meetings are on the 2nd Thursday of each month at Asbury Methodist Church on Candelaria, in the Heights area of Albuquerque. The meetings start at 6:30 pm. The Material Girls meet the 2nd Sunday of each month at Ann Silva's Bernina on Montano, near I-25. We meet from 1-4 PM. Let me know if you would like to attend either or both and I can get more information to you. nancyddaquino at gmail dot com.
