First Day of School Project

The collection date of the First Day of School project was at the July ASG meeting. Here are a few photos from the event:

We had an amazing response from the members! We were able to provide over 100 outfits to homeless elementary school students. We also received several donations from the public after our project was featured on the first page of the local newspaper. Definitely worthwhile! We plan to do this project again next year, so I'll be making more outfits during the year.

I spied a favorite print of my son's, the red and gold dragons. Over the years I have made him dragon shirts in both the red and gold and blue and black colorways. The last two of his shirts are being gifted to a friend for his back-to-school wardrobe. Terrific output of clothing from your guild.

That's a great project, Nancy. I remember worrying about how some of my now-grown-up kids' classmates would feel if their first day clothes were old or tattered. There was a little bit of help available for some families, but nothing on this scale. I love it!

Seeing this post really gladdens my heart. I get so tired of the narcissistic "all about me, my 50 pictures of me, and my fabulous fashion sense about me" posts in the blogosphere. It's so wonderful to see a post about something that truly makes a difference in people's lives. Nancy, you are an angel on earth. I hope more ASG groups do this project!

That's awesome Nancy - and you did a great job of appealing to every fashion sense!

I think we should make coats next. Any takers?

Nancy, This is SO impressive! What a great project you have. Our group makes mittens for the HeadStart kids, but this is such a good idea.

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments! This was such a fun project! Unfortunately, there is a great need. I think coats and jackets would be a great project, Kathleen. There is an ongoing program serving ABQ schools as well. I'm sure they would be grateful to receive coats as the weather turns colder.
